Noordgouwe - Conyer huisjes

City: noordgouwe is a village in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, a province of Zeeland, 6 km from Zierikzee. Up until the 14th century, the Gouwe, canal was here, separating the islands of Schouwen, Duiveland and Dreischor. The water silted up and two dams were built here giving rise to polder areas. Noordgouwe was once an agricultural village with lots of land workers. Today the focus is more on trade and repair.

Buildings: Conyer houses

In the year 1651 Mrs. Maria Potter, wife of trade master Conyer, donated a legacy to Noordgouwe to build a few houses for widows. The houses were called 'the Pottere houses' or 'Conyer houses'. The houses are now private property.

Object: In the middle of the outer wall were placed two stones: one for the coat of arms and one telling about the foundation. The Divine Name is written here in Latin.'Iehova providit' meaning 'Jehovah provides'.

With kind permission of the owners.
