Rotterdam - Burgerweeshuis (Civilian Orphanage)

City: "Rotterdam is a real metropolis. From a distance you can see the impressive skyline that makes the city a grand sight. Rotterdam is known nationally and internationally as an architectural city, with many examples of innovative architecture. For example, visit the famous cube houses and take a look at this from inside the show cube... The river Meuse flows through the city centre and, together with the now-famous Erasmus bridge is the symbol of Rotterdam. On the banks of the River are numerous ports, each with their own character. More downstream are the industrial ports, making Rotterdam the largest port city in Europe. - "www.rotterdam.info.

The name Rotterdam dates back to the 13th century and refers to a dam on the river Rotte. Rotterdam is today the second largest city in the Netherlands. It is home to no less than 603,425 inhabitants (2010). The population of the surrounding large metropolitan area is almost 1.5 million inhabitants.

Building: Burgerweeshuis (Civilian Orphanage)

The civilian orphanage of the Reformed Church was located in the Goudsewagenstraat.

Object: God's concern for orphans is written in Psalm 82:3 (American Standard Version): "Judge the poor and fatherless: Do justice to the afflicted and destitute." This text was the inspiration for the beautiful sculpture placed above the entrance of the orphanage. On the sculpture there is a picture of a child looking for protection and as proof that God is the father of all orphans the Tetragrammaton is written above it.

The relief can not be seen anymore. It was destroyed during the second World war. The pictures are preserved in the collection of the City achives of Rotterdam. They sent us both images.
