Strijen - Sint-Lambertuskerk

City: Strijen, in the local dialect 'Strien ', is a town and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. Strijen had 8,924 inhabitants at the beginning of 2010. It is probably that the name derived from the little river Striene. The founding act is dated as 992 when the Countess of Strijen donated various permanent properties (www.strijen.nl). Other interesting dates: about 1200 the title Lord of Strijen was adopted; in 1759 there was a terrible fire during which 102 homes were destroyed, there were many casualties during the Second World War and the flood of 1953 took 44 lives and many buildings.

Building: Sint-Lambertuskerk

The St.-Lambertus church of the Reformed Church is located in the kerkstraat 48. The present church is very old. The choir stand (east) is dated from around the year 1400, the nave is newer and must be early 1500's (believed to be 1511).

Object: Above the door is written: "Jehovah zegt" ("Jehovah says"). Underneath the name 1 Samuel 2:30 is quoted : "Die My Eeren zal Ik Eeren, Die My Versmaden Zullen Ligt Geacht Worden" (translation: "Those who honour me I honour in return, and those who despise me will be an object of contempt")
