't Woudt - kerk

City: ‘t Woudt is possibly the smallest village in the Netherlands. There are about 36 residents (in 2006). It is a picturesque village, nestling between the pastures, south of Delft. The village received its own identity in 1277 when under Floris V the parishioners of the village were given the right to have their own pastor. As it was centuries ago the village has now only a few houses, a couple farms, a friendly pub and a late gothic church.

Building: The church was built around 1500 and has been restored to its original state.

Object: Like most Protestant churches in the Netherlands, ‘t Woudt has its own church seal. Above the pulpit hangs a plaque with the 10 commandments. The handwriting is beautifully painted. Above it is the church seal shown as a small painting and a rather dark version of Psalm 1 verse 2 and 3. In an aureole we can see JHWH, the Hebrew name of God. Around the painting is written: “t Woudt is always burning with Gods love, 1599”. Today, the reformed municipality of ‘t Woudt has a new church seal, inspired by the former one.

There are in the church also two splendid Bibles, “Staten-Generaal” translations. In the Bible below, dated1682, God's name is also written.
