Malmö - Statue Karl X

City: Malmö is the second largest city in Sweden. The city lies in the most southern part of the country. Originally the city was founded in 1275 and was at that time part of Denmark. The city was given to Sweden at the Peace Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Due to the city's internet site, the city is now changing from an historical city to a city of knowledge. There has been great investment in many new technologies and high-tech training.

Object: When Queen Christina, the daughter of King Gustav II Adolf (see ‘Decorated collar’ on our page ‘Museums’ - or click here) abdicated her throne in 1654, it was in favour of her cousin Karl X Gustav. Karl X Gustav was born on November 8, 1622, the son of John Casimir, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg and Catharina Wasa, daughter of King Karl IX. A large part of his reign was spent engaged in warfare. There was the war against Poland, due to their claim on the Swedish throne, and the war against Denmark. King Karl X died during the night of February 13, 1660. He was 37 years of age.

In front of the city hall in Malmö, on the city square or Stortorget is a statue of this king. The statue was made in 1896 by John Börjeson. It was usual for every Swedish king to have his own motto. The royal motto of King Karl X can be seen on the reverse of the statue: "In Jehova sors mea, Ipse faciet" - translation: "In Jehovah lies my fate – He will do it"
