City: The city of Exeter is
the county town of Devon, in the southwest of England, also
known as the Westcountry. The city has a population of 122,400
inhabitants. The Latin name for Exeter suggests that the city
was originally a Celtic oppidum, or town, on the banks of
the River Exe, prior to the foundation of the Roman city in
about 50 A.D.
Building: Mardon Hall
The city has a University with the unofficial slogan:
"Probably the Best University in the World". The
students use a beautiful residence called Mardon Hall. This
residence has the slogan: "Probably the Best Hall of
Residence in the World".
The pictures are shown by kind courtesy of Mardon Hall,

The website: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/
Object: Mardon has five crests and mottos.
Four can be found in the 'Games-Room', the 'Television-Room',
the 'Library' and the 'Resident Tutors Reception Room' - they
belong to the counties of Devon and Cornwall and the cities
of Exeter and Plymouth. The fifth can be seen over the front
door.
Naturally, from our perspective, the one to be found
in the Library is very special. It shows the coat of arms
of the city of Plymouth. The motto written there reads: "Turris
fortissima est nomen Jehova" - translated: "A tower
of strength [is] the name of Jehovah" – from Proverbs
18:10.
