Saint Louis - Basilica of St. Louis, King of France

City: St. Louis is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The city was founded as a trading post by Pierre Laclede in 1763. The majority of the original inhabitants are of French origin. St. Louis was sold to Spain in 1770. It became a part of the United States in 1803.

St. Louis is the home to 353,837 people (2006).

Building: The Basilica of St. Louis, King of France (formerly known as the Cathedral of Saint Louis or Old Cathedral) was inaugurated in 1834. The Basilica is named after the French King Louis IX, the patron saint of the City of Saint Louis.

Voorwerp: With regard to God's name, the following photo is interesting. The name of God can be seen in front of the building. The text below the Tetragrammaton is: "In Honorem S. Ludovici. Deo Uni et Trino Dicatum. A. MDCCCXXXIV".

Why is God's name written here in Hebrew? There are two stories. One story is that, at the time the cathedral was built, it was the only church in the entire area. Members of other faiths were allowed to have their services there. Another version is that the lettering was put there as a gesture of friendship to the Jewish community.
