Santa Fe - Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica

City: Sante Fe is the capital of the American state of New Mexico. The state New Mexico is located in the south west of the United States. There are 73,240 inhabitants in Sante Fe.

As regards the origin of Sante Fe it is known that the city was founded as a settlement in the year 1610 by the Spanish governor Don Pedro de Peralta. The name Sante Fe is in fact Spanish and means ‘Holy faith’. The complete name that was given it was actually Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís', which is translated as ‘the Royal City of the Holy faith of Saint Francis of Assisi'. Before the immigration of the colonists the area was inhabited by Pueblo-indians. There are signs of settlements going back to the years 1050-1100. In 1846, the United States declared war on Mexico. Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny led his troops into the city and claimed the whole area including New Mexico. At the ‘Peace of Guadalupe Hidalgo’ in 1848, the area officially became part of the USA.

Building: Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica

The first church here was built in the same year as the city was founded - 1610. It was replaced by a second church in 1630 that was destroyed during the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680. It was not until 1714 that a new church was built. In 1850 the first bishop, Jean-Baptiste Lamy of France arrived. He judged that the church was no longer adequate and immediately commissioned a new church to be built that would have sufficient dignity for an archdiocese. He brought over French architects and Italian master workers for this. The church was built between 1869 and 1887 in the Romanesque style. In 2005, the church was elevated to a basilica by Pope Benedictus XVI.

Object: Immediately as you enter the church you can see God’s name. God’s name is here represented by the tetragrammaton.
