Savannah - Independent Presbyterian Church

City: Savannah is a city in Georgia, a State of the USA situated in the South of the West Coast. This city was, together with the English colony Georgia, founded in 1733 by the English nobleman General James Oglethorpe. Savannah is built on the River Savannah, about 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major shipping port. Every year many tourists come to enjoy the ancient city and the beauty of the restored houses.

Building: The Presbyterian Church in Savannah, later called the Independent Presbyterian Church, was founded in 1755. The first church was built on land granted by King George II. A fire devastated it in 1790. In 1800 a new church was built on Saint James' Square (today called Telfair Square). This church was also destroyed, this time by a hurricane. A third church was built on Bull Street and South Broad Street (today called Oglethorpe Avenue). The church was inaugurated in 1829. Lowel Mason, a well-known American composer (see our page ‘Music’), has served in this church as organist. Woodrow Wilson, (who later became President) and Ellen Louise Axon were married here in 1855. There was a great fire in 1889 after which the church was rebuilt again.

Object: On the outer wall, above the entrance door God’s name is written as JEHOVAE (in Latin form).
